    MacWilliams' Extension Theorem for Bi-Invariant Weights over Finite Principal Ideal Rings

    A finite ring R and a weight w on R satisfy the Extension Property if every R-linear w-isometry between two R-linear codes in R^n extends to a monomial transformation of R^n that preserves w. MacWilliams proved that finite fields with the Hamming weight satisfy the Extension Property. It is known that finite Frobenius rings with either the Hamming weight or the homogeneous weight satisfy the Extension Property. Conversely, if a finite ring with the Hamming or homogeneous weight satisfies the Extension Property, then the ring is Frobenius. This paper addresses the question of a characterization of all bi-invariant weights on a finite ring that satisfy the Extension Property. Having solved this question in previous papers for all direct products of finite chain rings and for matrix rings, we have now arrived at a characterization of these weights for finite principal ideal rings, which form a large subclass of the finite Frobenius rings.     Customers as decision-makers: strategic environmental assessment in the private sector

    Despite its diversification and global spread, strategic environmental assessment (SEA) remains limited mainly to activities characterised by well-defined planning processes, typically within the public sector. This article explores the possible application of SEA within certain private-sector contexts where higher-level strategy-making itself is inherently weaker and development is often piecemeal and reactive. The possible adaptation of SEA to the preparation of a strategic document by a particular industrial concern in the UK is examined: this draws attention to the multi-actor nature of development processes within the industry. This leads to the suggestion that SEA in this setting should be thought of as a form of environmental advocacy oriented towards industrial customers, who are understood as sharing a decision-making role in infrastructure development.</p

    A meta-analytic assessment of a Thyroglobulin marker for marbling in beef cattle

    A meta-analysis was undertaken reporting on the association between a polymorphism in the Thyroglobulin gene (TG5) and marbling in beef cattle. A Bayesian hierarchical model was adopted, with alternative representations assessed through sensitivity analysis. Based on the overall posterior means and posterior probabilities, there is substantial support for an additive association between the TG5 marker and marbling. The marker effect was also assessed across various breed groups, with each group displaying a high probability of positive association between the T allele and marbling.     Porcine Head Response to Blast

    Recent studies have shown an increase in the frequency of traumatic brain injuries related to blast exposure. However, the mechanisms that cause blast neurotrauma are unknown. Blast neurotrauma research using computational models has been one method to elucidate that response of the brain in blast, and to identify possible mechanical correlates of injury. However, model validation against experimental data is required to ensure that the model output is representative of in vivo biomechanical response. This study exposes porcine subjects to primary blast overpressures generated using a compressed-gas shock tube. Shock tube blasts were directed to the unprotected head of each animal while the lungs and thorax were protected using ballistic protective vests similar to those employed in theater. The test conditions ranged from 110 to 740 kPa peak incident overpressure with scaled durations from 1.3 to 6.9 ms and correspond approximately with a 50% injury risk for brain bleeding and apnea in a ferret model scaled to porcine exposure. Instrumentation was placed on the porcine head to measure bulk acceleration, pressure at the surface of the head, and pressure inside the cranial cavity. Immediately after the blast, 5 of the 20 animals tested were apneic. Three subjects recovered without intervention within 30 s and the remaining two recovered within 8 min following respiratory assistance and administration of the respiratory stimulant doxapram. Gross examination of the brain revealed no indication of bleeding. Intracranial pressures ranged from 80 to 390 kPa as a result of the blast and were notably lower than the shock tube reflected pressures of 300–2830 kPa, indicating pressure attenuation by the skull up to a factor of 8.4. Peak head accelerations were measured from 385 to 3845 G’s and were well correlated with peak incident overpressure (R2 = 0.90).     Effectiveness of an Algorithm-Based Approach to the Utilization of Plerixafor in Patients Undergoing Chemotherapy-Based Stem Cell Mobilization

    AbstractAutologous stem cell transplantation remains a mainstay of therapy for diseases such as multiple myeloma and relapsed lymphoma. The use of plerixafor has been shown to augment the ability to collect adequate stem cells, but the optimal use of this agent when used with chemotherapy is not yet clear. We utilized an algorithm-based approach with the addition of plerixafor to 54 patients undergoing chemomobilization with reduced-dose etoposide who had a less than optimal preapheresis CD34+ cell count. We used a CD34+ precount of 20 cells/μL as a threshold to initiate stem cell apheresis. Ninety-four percent of patients were successfully collected and proceeded to transplantation. Fourteen of 51 (28%) patients who successfully collected required plerixafor to augment stem cell yield. Of the patients who successfully collected, 94% (89% of the entire population) were able to collect in 2 or fewer days. Compared with previous data from our institution, the rate of patients collecting > 4 × 106 CD34+ cells/kg in a single collection was increased from 39% to 69%. The safety profile of this approach was acceptable. The use of this algorithm-based method to determine when and whether to add plerixafor to chemomobilization was shown to be a successful and cost-effective approach to stem cell collection
